Most travellers arrive by air into Paro, on one of the most spectacular flights in the world. A few overland crossings from India make for a memorable alternative.
By air
Paro International Airport is Bhutan's only international airport, served by the national carrier Drukair and by Bhutan Airlines. Direct flights connect Paro with cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Bangkok and Singapore; routes and schedules vary by season.
Landing in Paro is a visual approach between steep mountain ridges, so flights only operate in daylight and can be affected by weather. On clear days the flight from Kathmandu passes the high Himalaya, including Everest.
By land
- Phuentsholing — the main western crossing, opposite Jaigaon in West Bengal; the nearest airport is Bagdogra
- Gelephu — the southern-central crossing, gateway to the new Gelephu Mindfulness City
- Samdrup Jongkhar — the eastern crossing, about three hours from Guwahati in Assam
Planning tips
- Book flights to Paro early in festival seasons (spring and autumn)
- Leave a buffer day before onward international connections in case of weather delays
- Land crossings are open during daylight hours; we meet you at the border
Regulations and fees change from time to time; we always confirm the latest details in your quotation.
