All LGBTQ+ Travellers — A Safe Haven to Visit

All LGBTQ+ Travellers — A Safe Haven to Visit

Why Bhutan is a welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travellers.

Draft — for review before publishing

Bhutan is known for its gentle, tolerant culture — and in recent years its laws have caught up with its values.

A change in the law

In 2020 Bhutan's parliament voted to amend the penal code to remove the sections that had criminalised same-sex relationships, and the change became law in 2021. It was passed with broad support and widely welcomed at home and abroad.

A tolerant society

Buddhist values of compassion and acceptance run deep in Bhutanese life, and LGBTQ+ travellers generally report a warm, respectful welcome. Local advocacy groups have also helped build understanding in recent years.
