Bhutan is often called the happiest country on earth. The truth is more interesting: happiness here isn't a ranking, it's a national goal.
Happiness as policy
Through Gross National Happiness, Bhutan treats wellbeing as the purpose of government. Clean rivers, free healthcare, protected culture and close-knit communities are all part of the picture.
What you'll notice
- People who make time to talk, share tea and laugh
- Families gathering in their finest clothes at festivals
- Prayer flags sending blessings on the wind from every ridge
- A pace of life that leaves room for what matters
Bring it home
Many travellers tell us they leave Bhutan calmer and more grateful than they arrived. A night at a monastery, a quiet walk to a hilltop temple or an afternoon with a farming family is often where that change begins.
