Living with Locals — Homestay Experience

Wood smoke, butter tea and the warmth of a Bhutanese farmhouse.

Draft — for review before publishing

A night in a farmhouse is the closest you can come to everyday life in Bhutan — and for many travellers it's the highlight of their journey.

The farmhouse

Traditional farmhouses are built of rammed earth and timber, often three storeys high, with painted window frames and a family altar room. Rooms are simple and spotless, with thick quilts for cold nights.

A day with the family

  • Help in the fields or the kitchen garden
  • Cook ema datshi and red rice around the stove
  • Taste suja (butter tea) and ara, the home-distilled spirit
  • Soak in a hot stone bath under the stars
  • Share stories, songs and laughter after dinner

Where we stay

Our favourite farmstays are in the Paro and Haa valleys, the Phobjikha valley and Bumthang. Each family is chosen for their warmth and hospitality, and your stay supports rural households directly.
